World Pediatric Project Announces Support of Pediatric Healthcare in Guyana

Engagement between WPP and the Government of Guyana to commence in the fall of 2023

Richmond, Virginia, USA – World Pediatric Project announces, in collaboration with the Government of Guyana, the launch of a program aimed at increasing access to children awaiting surgical care in the country. Entering its 24th year working to increase global access to advanced pediatric services, World Pediatric Project returns to Guyana where the organization first began program activity in 2001, under the name International Hospital for Children

Led by Her Excellency Arya Ali, First Lady of Guyana, Vafa Akhavan, CEO of World Pediatric Project, Mr. Robbie Rombarran, CEO of Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, along with hospital representatives, physician specialists, and WPP regional leadership, exploratory meetings were held to identify the immediate needs and discuss the future of the collaboration.

The partnership will launch in the fall of 2023 with two pilot programs to assist with direct pediatric tertiary care. Three key focal points were identified for the long-term collaboration:

  • Direct medical care assistance and support for pediatric patients in identified specialties.
  • Advanced pediatric training and support of Guyanese physicians, nurses, and specialists in certain specialties.
  • Health system support for the pediatric and maternal hospital currently under construction in Georgetown, Guyana.

The collaboration between World Pediatric Project and the Government of Guyana will increase immediate access to advanced pediatric healthcare in Guyana while concurrently strengthening the overall pediatric healthcare system.

As noted by Her Excellency Ali, “with this collaboration, we will begin to clear the backlogs of advanced pediatric surgeries in Guyana and move our country onto the path of health modernization.”
