World Pediatrics and the McKean Foundation recently joined President Nasry Asfura and government leaders in Honduras for a meaningful discussion centered on a shared goal: improving access to advanced pediatric healthcare for children and families across the country.
The meeting brought together leaders committed to strengthening pediatric healthcare systems, expanding access to specialized services, and ensuring that children receive the care they need closer to home. Representing World Pediatrics were CEO Vafa Akhavan and Natalia Rosales, Executive Director for the Latin America Region. They were joined by Jennifer and Nathan McKean, whose family’s longstanding commitment to children through the McKean Foundation continues to create opportunities for life-changing care.
The discussion reflected a shared vision for the future of pediatric healthcare in Honduras—one in which children have greater access to specialized services, local healthcare professionals have increased opportunities for training and collaboration, and healthcare systems are strengthened to meet the needs of future generations.
For more than two decades, World Pediatrics has worked shoulder-to-shoulder with healthcare providers, hospitals, government leaders, and community partners throughout Honduras. Together, these partnerships have helped thousands of children access specialized evaluations, surgeries, treatments, and follow-up care that might otherwise have been out of reach.
What makes moments like this especially meaningful is the recognition that sustainable change happens through collaboration. Improving children’s health requires more than individual interventions; it requires strong local partnerships, investments in healthcare capacity, and a shared commitment to long-term solutions that can continue serving children for years to come.
The meeting also served as an opportunity to recognize the dedicated team members who work every day to advance that mission. World Pediatrics extends its gratitude to Ileana Cerrato, Country Representative for Honduras, and the entire Honduras team for their leadership, perseverance, and commitment to children and families. Their work has helped build the relationships, trust, and momentum that make opportunities like this possible.
As World Pediatrics looks toward the future, Honduras remains an important part of the organization’s commitment to transforming access to advanced pediatric healthcare throughout Latin America and beyond. By bringing together governments, healthcare leaders, philanthropic partners, and local communities, we can continue creating pathways to care for children who need it most.
Every child deserves the opportunity to grow, thrive, and reach their full potential. Through strong partnerships and a shared vision for the future, we move one step closer to making that goal a reality for more children across Honduras.
