From Patient to Provider: Kellyn’s Journey of Healing and Hope

HONDURAS / ST. LOUIS — At just seven years old, Kellyn left her home in Honduras for the first time to receive medical care that was unavailable in her country. Born with proximal femoral focal deficiency, a rare congenital condition affecting the development of the upper thigh bone, Kellyn required complex orthopedic care and long-term prosthetic support.

In 2008, her journey with World Pediatrics began when she traveled to St. Louis to receive treatment at Shriners Hospital for Children – St. Louis. What followed was not a single intervention, but years of coordinated care that continued throughout her childhood—care that addressed not only her physical needs, but her future.

Because Kellyn’s mother was unable to travel and needed to remain home to care for her siblings, Kellyn stayed with a host family, Cathy and Mike Garner, during her medical visits. Over time, they became more than hosts. They became her family—supporting her through surgeries, recovery, and milestones, and eventually sponsoring her education as well.

Today, Kellyn is 25 years old—and beginning a new chapter. In 2023, she enrolled in nursing school in Honduras. She is now starting her clinical practice, recently observing a birth and helping care for a newborn for the first time.

“I was so happy,” Kellyn shared. “It reminded me why I chose this path.”

Inspired by the care she received as a child, Kellyn dreams of specializing in maternal and child health. Her goal is simple and powerful: to give back to her community with the same compassion that once transformed her own life.

Kellyn’s story reflects what is possible when access to advanced pediatric healthcare is paired with long-term commitment. With the right care and support, children do more than heal. They grow. They lead. And they return that care to the world.

World Pediatrics is proud to walk alongside patients like Kellyn—not just for a moment, but for a lifetime.
